New ‘Y U Play?’ Survey from MocoSpace Reveals "Killing Time" as a Top Reason that Americans Play Games on Mobile Phones
One-third of mobile gamers play because it's a fun way to kill some time, another third play for entertainment
BOSTON – May 17, 2012 – Today MocoSpace, the leading games destination on the mobile Internet, is announcing results of a new ‘Y U Play?’ survey conducted on its network of more than 25 million users. The poll revealed the two most popular reasons people play mobile games: boredom, and to have fun. Roughly one-third of all respondents chose ‘Bored / kill time’ as their response when asked to select the main reason they play games on their mobile device, and another third said ‘the games are fun’.
More than 10,000 gamers participated in the April 2012 study, which was conducted to gain understanding around why Americans like to play mobile games. Over half (55 percent) of all active MocoSpace users play games on the network. Every day, more than one million hours are spent playing one million games on the site.
Participants were asked, “What is the main reason you play games on your mobile phone?” and only allowed to select one answer. The results are as follows:
• 34 percent: The games are fun
• 32 percent: Bored / kill time
• 10 percent: I like to compete
• 9 percent: To meet new people
• 6 percent: To try something new
• 3 percent: I’m always on the go
• 3 percent: To flirt
• 2 percent: Connect with my friends
• Less than 1 percent: Connect with my family

The data shows that making new friends trumps gaming with existing friends and family; players prefer meeting new people via games five times more than connecting with people they already know.
Many MocoSpace games are inherently social, with options to challenge other players, or in some games, join forces. In the vampire-themed game True Night, players can advance more quickly by adding other players to their clan; and in Street Wars, gamers get ahead by adding others to their mob.
Mobile games are also being played in the classroom, the survey revealed. Nearly 31 percent of respondents admit to playing games in class. Of those who said they play in class, boredom is the leading factor for their unscholarly behavior. The reasons why people play games in class are (Respondents could again only choose one answer):
• 42 percent: Class is boring
• 41 percent: Have some down time
• 15 percent: Hooked on the game
• 2 percent: My classmates play
“This survey showed us that our gamers are really engaged with the titles we are offering,” said MocoSpace co-founder and CEO Justin Siegel. “We are working on developing more games in-house as well as fostering relationships with third-party developers in order to churn out more fun HTML5 games that can be played on any mobile device.”
