At Home, Mobile Games Rule, Says New Survey of 15,000 Respondents
Nearly all respondents play mobile games at home at least once a day, and the most popular location to play at home is...the bed
BOSTON – March 22, 2012 – Today MocoSpace, the largest entertainment destination on the mobile Internet, is announcing results of a new ‘Where u play?’ surveyconducted on its network of 25 million users. Surprisingly, mobile games are played most often at home, not on-the-go. 96 percent of respondents said they play mobile games at least once a day at home, and 53 percent chose ‘in bed’ as the place they play games most often in their home.
The study surveyed over 15,000 gamers in February 2012 to gain understanding around where Americans like to play mobile games.
Here’s where respondents play*:
• 96 percent: At home
• 83 percent: Waiting for an appointment
• 72 percent: Commute by train, bus, or car
• 64 percent: At work
• 64 percent: Out with friends
• 46 percent: In class
• 25 percent: At the gym
The MocoSpace data supports findings of other reports from mobile gaming leaders, including Travis Boatman, vice president of worldwide studios for EA Mobile at Electronic Arts, who said last year that 47 percent of the time, users play mobile games while at home.
Participants were also asked, ‘At home, where do you mostly play games on your mobile phone?’ and only allowed to select one answer. This question revealed the following results:
• 53 percent: Bed
• 41 percent: Living Room
• 5 percent: Bathroom
• 1 percent: Dinner table
Mobile games are also played for longer durations than might be expected. The report revealed console-like engagement of mobile games, with 52 percent of respondents playing over one hour per day and 32 percent playing over three hours daily. Unfortunately for employers, 10 percent of respondents play mobile games for more than three hours while at work.
When asked ‘What types of games do you play on your mobile device?’ social games reigned supreme. Here’s how different mobile games categories fared in the survey*:
• 62 percent: Social
• 53 percent: Action
• 40 percent: Puzzle
• 28 percent: Casino style
"This report should make every console gaming company nervous,” said MocoSpace co-founder and CEO Justin Siegel. "Mobile gaming is not a companion to consoles, but rather it’s attacking them on their home turf: the couch, the La-Z-Boy and even the bedroom.”
